Welcome to Paradise Island

On Friday the 13th of September, Emiel Martens will defend my PhD Thesis Welcome to Paradise Island: The Rise of Jamaica’s Cine-Tourist Image, 1891-1951 at the University of Amsterdam. To celebrate this occasion, we would like to invite you to come party with us that evening at BAUT (Wibautstraat 125, Amsterdam).

The party will be hosted in the festive tradition of events previously organized by Emiel’s foundation
Caribbean Creativity, Jamaican style, with film and music. The party starts at 20.30 o’clock with a screening of Jamaica for Sale, a powerful documentary by Esther Figueroa about the negative impacts of mass tourism in Jamaica (it is a film that shares many common themes and goals with Emiel’s PhD thesis). Following the screening, at 22.30 o’clock, the beautiful singer Shrima Rouse will give an intimate live performance. After this, the DJs of Yard Vibes will take over for a massive reggae-dancehall party from 23.30 o’clock until the small hours of the morning.
The party is open to anyone (please do feel free to bring friends, colleagues and other party-minded people!) and you are welcome to arrive at any time during the evening. The entrance will be free, but we do greatly welcome contributions towards the foundation, and so there will be a box at the entrance.
There is no need to RSVP for the party, but we would like to ask anyone who wishes to attend the film screening to please send an email to info@caribbeancreativity.nl beforehand, so that we can reserve seats.
