The Curaçao waltz ‘Nostalgia’

The Curaçao waltz ‘Nostalgia’ composed by Wim Statius Muller has been arranged by Jos Pijnappel to be played as a piano trio. The waltz is performed by Inge Laurijssens (violin), Mariëtte Landheer (cello) and Ilja Huang (piano). The recording took place during a concert on 24 September 2023 in the Amstelkerk in Amsterdam and was organized by the Palm Music Foundation.

Composer Wim Statius Muller (Curaçao, 1930-2019) received piano lessons from the age of seven from musician and composer Jacobo Palm. Frédéric Chopin’s waltzes and mazurkas, which were often played in Curaçao, strongly influenced his work. From 1949 onwards, Statius Muller received further training at the famous Juilliard School of Music in New York. There he studied piano, composition and orchestration with Josef Raieff, Bernard Wagenaar, Emmanuel Balaban and Henry Brant.

Statius Muller, also known as the Chopin of Curaçao, mainly composed Curaçao waltzes, but also other Caribbean dances such as the tumba and the calypso. His dances are not primarily intended for dancing, but are stylized and refined into concert music. Nostalgia is one of his better-known compositions.
