Disclosing Diaries
This event consists of visual connections to the plantation ground by the documentation of historical narrations about the plantation Berg en Dal and several pages from missionary diaries (1862) describing the personal relationships and complaints of the enslaved after emancipation. Visual aspects of the documentary contain diverse elements of the artistic work of Sarojini Lewis such performance and embodiment of the rituals and stories which she made in collaboration with the main characters of the band Ravech: Chaver Stutgard, Reindell Stutgard, Adam Wakidin and Raydle Santjes.

Op donderdag 25 april vindt in de KB in Den Haag de opening plaats van de expositie Reciting Footsteps of a Female Migrant: Soerdie. De tentoonstelling is geïnspireerd door een spoor van de eerste vrouwelijke Brits-Indische contractarbeider die in 1868 naar Suriname migreerde. Dichter Chitra Gajadin zal bij de opening voordragen.

Op 5 juni 1873, 150 jaar geleden, kwamen de eerste ‘contractarbeiders’ per schip in Suriname aan. Velen waren onder valse voorwendselen in het huidige India geronseld. Over hun geschiedenis en de Hindostaanse bevolking doen veel misverstanden de ronde. Vier Hindostaanse vrouwen willen daar verandering in brengen.
