Jesse Herrenberg

by Johan Herrenberg

My dear father, Eugène ‘Jesse’ Herrenberg, seated in the foreground, sailed from Suriname to Amsterdam in 1948, 19 years old, and started to make his life here. During the 1950s, apart from earning his living in construction and, later, in the timber business (Bruynzeel), he was a musician and bandleader. The band was called Conjunto Sibonay, and they brought the house down with swinging ‘kawina’ music at Surinamese parties in Amsterdam (places like Krasnapolsky, Brakke Grond, Tropenmuseum…) and even in Germany. When he married my mother, Alie Keizer, in 1957, he quit this career to become a devoted husband and terrific father.
