The natural surrealism of Saba’s unique nature is enhanced by Cornet usage of intense colors and unconventional materials. Every painting starts with a sketch – pencil, watercolor or oil paint – she makes while camping in nature. After returning in her studio, she adds images from her memory or fantasy. Sometimes she uses photo’s, for instance of butterflies or bats as in the paintings Black Witch Triptitch and Bat. Using sand, lace or leaves as stamps, she adds structure to her paintings.
About the artist
Heleen Cornet was born in the Netherlands, where she obtained a degree in education and a masters degree in fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amersfoort. Nearly forty years ago, she moved to the Caribbean to work as an art teacher on Bonaire and Saba.
Cornet illustrated many books about Caribbean nature and architecture, published with her husband, marine biologist Tom van ‘t Hof. In the mural for the Sacred Heart Church in The Bottom she combined rainforest scenes with religious symbols.
Cornets unique style is also recognized by the international art community. Her paintings and installations were shown at many prestigious exhibitions, including the Biennales in Santa Domingo and Brazil and exhibitions in France, Italy, Cuba and the United States. In 2010 she received an international award for innovation in watercolor painting. “The deep, dark purples, oranges, browns, greens and blues that give many of her paintings structure are as saturated as oil paints yet maintain the flowing gradients of watercolor paints,” according to a review by Agora Gallery in New York.
