Soapbox presents: The misery of minstrelsy
S.O.A.P.box is een nieuwe maandelijkse bijeenkomst voor – en door jongeren die de puzzelstukjes bij elkaar legt van het Nederlands kolonialisme en alle do’s en don’ts Afro-diaspora kunst bespreekbaar maakt. S.O.A.P. box focust zich op literatuur, hiphop-cultuur, theater, film, fotografie en de Nederlandse journalistiek als erfenis. Verder ook de gevolgen, de spiegel en de toekomst van de transatlantische slavenhandel.
NiNsee biedt door dit te faciliteren jongeren een plek om bezig te zijn met hun identiteit, onder elkaar bepaalde onderwerpen te bespreken en met elkaar in discussie te gaan.

The ever so objective Webster’s dictionary describes blackface as: ‘The makeup (usually burnt cork) used by a performer in order to imitate a Negro’.
The word Negro is worth its own S.O.A.P.box-edition but on Sunday December 5th we focus on blackface and its place in popular Dutch culture.

* Exactly how much racism can be covered by the cloak of tradition and culture?
* When you look at characters like Zwarte Piet and Wendy van Dijk’s ‘Dushi’ what can be said about the place of blackface in popular Dutch culture?
