This international conference seeks to explore contemporary issues in the study of sex and sexuality in Latin America and the Caribbean. In particular, we are interested in shifts in the political economy of intimacy and the ways in which cultural, political and economic power structures shape sexual practices and ideologies in the region. How is sexual agency and identity situated within political and economic structures? On what scales and through which dynamicsare sexual subjectivities constructed, and how do they intersect with gender, race and ethnicity and class? How do intimacy and economics interact in sexual encounters? Are social norms and practices changing, and how is this influenced by or reflected in fields such as popular culture and religion? What impact have women’s and gay rights movements had on sexual freedom? How do nation-states compete with global actors, including international NGOs, in shaping sexual ideology and practice? How can we understand changes in reproductive and sexual rights in a regional context of migration, transnationalism, democratization and the ‘Left Turn’?
