Scott Rollins, al veertig jaar in Nederland actief als auteur, uitgever, boek-, film- en muziekpromotor en in Caraïbische kringen bekend van zijn vertalingen van tal van auteurs in het Engels, wordt 60. Gelijktijdig met zijn 60ste verjaardag verschijnt zijn nieuwe boek Rings of the Tree & Other Vignettes. Het wordt op dinsdag 20 november bij het ABC Treehouse in Amsterdam gevierd. Scott zal voordragen uit het boek.

Bomen en wortels – passende metaforen voor poëzie, voor alle componenten van deze levende wezens die ons van zuurstof voorzien, een schuilplaats bieden tegen de elementen, stille getuigenissen zijn die onze vergankelijkheid gekerfd als initialen dragen op hun basten, met hun uitgeholde stronken onze voorouders over oceanen vervoerden, hun bladeren die ons balsemen, thee en medicijnen schenken om onze ziekelijke lichamen en geesten te genezen. En waar groeien onze bomen nu? Zijn ze hier nog slechts om met miljarden geveld te worden, pulped fictions op de goederenmarkten van onze opwarmende planeet?
The publication of Scott Rollins’ new book Rings of the Tree & Other Vignettes coincides with his 60th birthday. Scott will read from his book. In the forty years he has lived in the Netherlands he has made his living as a cultural entrepreneur, active in literature, music and film.
Trees and roots – apt metaphors for poetry, all the constituents of those living beings that provide us with oxygen, root us to a sense of place, shelter us from the elements, silent witnesses bearing our transiently carved initials in their barks, their hollowed trunks transporting our ancestors across oceans, their leaves offering balms, teas and medicines to salve our ailing bodies and souls. And where are our trees growing now? Are they merely here to be felled by the billions, pulped fictions in the commodity markets of the warming globe?
