Introduction to Caribbean Studies

In the second semester of the academic year 2014-2015 the KITLV/Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies organizes, for the 29th time, the interuniversitary course Introduction to Caribbean Studies. Participation is open to all students studying at a Dutch university and anyone else interested in the Caribbean. The course will mainly be offered in Dutch.el dorado

Themes
The course consists of 24 lectures and will include the following topics: ecology, colonialism, the slave trade, plantations and slavery, cultural heritage, contract labor, farmers and post-plantation economy, migration, transnational communities, race relations, the plural society, African-American cultures, and Afro-Asian creolization, ethnicity, kinship and sexuality, literature and music, art and culture, socio-economic development, decolonization, the drug economy, local politics and international relations. We will, among others, discuss the following Caribbean countries: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, the Dutch Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Period
The course Introduction to Caribbean Studies will be offered as an intensive course of 12 weeks from February to April, 2015. Examination will take place by means of a written exam (total 10 ECTS).

Course fee
For students there is a reduced course fee of €35,00. Third parties are able to participate in limited numbers and on payment of the full course fee of € 140.00. Participation is only after secured after submitting the registration form and payment/receipt of proof of participation.
