Gail Eijk werd door Apintie beschuldigd van ‘gesjoemel’ voor medische verklaring

De Surinaamse journaliste Gail Eijk maakte vorig week bekend dat zij na 13 jaar opstapte bij radio- en televisiezender Apintie. In een nieuwe besloten video op Facebook deelt de geliefde 46-jarige verslaggeefster haar kant van het verhaal en vertelt Eijk waarom zij de eer aan zichzelf hield en opstapte bij de zender.

Eijk werd halverwege augustus onwel en moest opgenomen worden in het ziekenhuis. Na een ziektebed van een week mocht Eijk naar huis, met het advies om voorlopig thuis te blijven en rust te houden.
Eijk bleef echter onder behandeling van een arts, die haar het advies gaf om er even tussen uit te gaan om tot rust te komen. De journaliste kreeg van deze arts een medische verklaring (attest) tot 18 oktober. Toen Eijk de verklaring naar Apintie bracht bleek er echter een probleem te zijn. Eijk had te weinig vakantie-uren opgebouwd. “Toen werd mij al gezegd dat het attest niet geldig was. Dan zou ik buiten bezwaar moeten tekenen, wat ik heb gedaan omdat ik voor mijzelf koos”, zegt Eijk. Zodoende vertrok Eijk zonder problemen bij de zender naar Nederland voor een aantal weken vakantie, waar zij zichtbaar van genoot.
Verrassing
Ondanks het gesprek met Apintie voor haar vertrek naar Nederland en de ondertekende medische verklaring kwam Eijk bij terugkomst voor een zeer onaangename en plotselinge verrassing te staan, waardoor zij zich gedwongen zag om ontslag te nemen bij de zender. “Mij werd gezegd er zijn andere structuren. Ik ben acht jaar Hoofd Nieuwsdienst geweest daar. Ik zou nu moeten werken onder andere mensen. Zij zouden bepalen wat ik zou doen, hoe ik het moest doen, wanneer ik het moest doen en met wie ik het moest doen”, vertelt de journaliste, die zegt dat vooral de toon en de manier waarop de boodschap werd overgebracht haar niet beviel.

Conscious choice
Eijk says to find the event unjust, but lets it know that she made a conscious choice with a reason. “For me, it’s not about position, position can be stolen.” “I am who I am.” At a certain moment in my life, and that is something I have done too little, I also want to give that value to myself. I have always pushed myself away for people and this time I wanted to stand up for myself, which I did not deserve , “says Eijk.
Nevertheless, the journalist says he has learned a lot at Apintie. Eijk does not want to give a kick. She says thank you for the honor and for the fact that she was allowed to build her career at Apintie. Hateful is not Eijk either. “No one is irreplaceable, not even me, I give everyone everything.” The reporter says that the whole incident has given her a positive boost.
Future
Eijk does not sit down and does not worry about the future. She says she has already had several offers from employers. “I now think about which is the most suitable for me”. A political career at least excludes the reporter. Eijk says that she wants to return to work on 1 November.
The journalist does not exclude that she will remain in Suriname in the future. “If I do not feel happy here anymore, then I think I’ll take my wings off, elsewhere.”
Eijk’s annual ‘Mother’s Special’ will return. “It’s a project that has been started by me anyway.” If I go to another medium, I’ll just run it my way again, but it’s not going to carry the same name, but maybe a different name and a little different. “ says Eijk. What will happen with ‘In the Branding’ is not yet clear.
The reporter also says she recently started writing her second book.
