‘Elly’ waltz by Rudolf Palm
Performance by Twente Youth Symphonic Orchestra
The Curaçaoan musician and composer Rudolf Palm composed his concert waltz “Elly” in November 1943. This waltz, dedicated to Elly Glans on the occasion of her second birthday, was composed at the request of Elly Glans’ parents. Elly Glans’ mother had lessons from Rudolf Palm for 9 years. Elly Glans’ parents left Suriname in the 1930s and settled in the Penstraat on Curaçao. Rudolf Palm (Curaçao, 1880-1950) played piano, organ, clarinet, flute and saxophone. From the age of seven he received music lessons from his grandfather Jan Gerard Palm.
Rudolf Palm was organist for many years at the Protestant Fort Church, the Emanu-El synagogue, the Mikvé Israel synagogue and the Freemason Lodge Igualdad. Besides being a talented performer, Rudolf Palm also made a name for himself as a composer. He wrote more than 140 compositions. The Twente Youth Symphonic Orchestra TJSO (www.tjso.nl) conducted by Carl Wittrock, can be considered one of the best youth orchestras in the Netherlands. Over the years, the orchestra has participated in various international competitions and festivals, such as: The Helikon Festival in Hungary, the European Music Festivals in Barcelona and Budapest and the Florence International Youth Festival. In addition, the orchestra has participated several times in the National Competition for Youth Symphony Orchestras in the Netherlands.
