Colson Whitehead in gesprek met Nancy Jouwe
Met de serie Current Literary Affairs onderzoeken SLAA, Bijlmer Parktheater en Read my world het internationale literaire discours anno nu. Met het oog op Read My World 2017 Black USA halen we voor de eerste edities twee Amerikaanse schrijvers naar Nederland: Colson Whitehead en Yaa Gyasi.

De ondergrondse spoorweg handelt over Cora, slaaf op een katoenplantage in Georgia. Het leven op de plantage is vreselijk voor alle slaven, maar Cora is zelfs binnen deze categorie nog een uitzondering: langzaamaan begint ze in een jonge vrouw te veranderen, met alle gevolgen van dien. Nadat zij verkracht is door de wrede eigenaar van de plantage ontmoet ze Caesar, net aangekomen uit Virginia. Hij vertelt haar over de Underground Railroad, een netwerk van safe houses en geheime routes die hen naar vrije staten kan leiden, en ze beginnen hun ontsnapping van de plantage te plannen.

With the upcoming Black USA edition of Read My World Festival in mind, we asked two American novelists to join us on this quest: Colson Whitehead and Yaa Gyasi.
On the 22nd of January, specialist in gender, ethnicity and postcolonial studies Nancy Jouwe will engage in conservation with Colson Whitehead, author of The Underground Railroad.
