Je zou Urbina, de nieuwe roman van de uit Curaçao afkomstige schrijver Eric de Brabander (1953) een ‘docu-novel’ of ‘faction’ kunnen noemen. De Brabander is erin geslaagd om op basis van feiten een meeslepend en spannend verhaal te componeren waarin Rafael Simón Urbina Lopez (1897-1950) centraal staat. Lopez was een Venezolaans politiek leider en revolutionair, die onder meer streed tegen het dictatoriale regime van Juan Vicente Gómez(1857-1935). Het mooie van deze vorm van fictie is dat de geschiedenis echt tot leven komt door het vertelperspectief van de personages. De leemtes tussen de feiten vult de auteur op met fictie. De Brabander weet daarbij in zijn verhaal met als grote thema’s eerlijkheid en gelijkberechtiging mooi het evenwicht te bewaren.

maakt basisregistraties mogelijk op Bonaire, Saba en Sint Eustatius
De bijzondere Nederlandse gemeenten Bonaire, Saba en Sint Eustatius zijn vanaf eind 2023 te vinden in het Satellietdataportaal van de Rijksoverheid. Alle Nederlanders kunnen kosteloos gebruikmaken van de hoge resolutie satellietdata. Op de eilanden worden de gegevens gebruikt voor het opzetten van nu nog ontbrekende basisregistratiesystemen.

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) regretfully advises of the passing of retired CCJ Judge, Mr Justice Jacob Wit.
Mr Justice Wit was a member of the inaugural CCJ bench in 2005 and he diligently served until his retirement in December 2023. This native of the Netherlands was an eminent jurist with wide legal expertise in private law, commercial and admiralty law, insurance, bankruptcy and insolvency, company law and intellectual property, criminal law, military law, administrative law, constitutional law, and international human rights law. Prior to joining the CCJ, he adjudicated over cases in Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, and the Dutch Windward Islands of Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba.

I am terribly sad to share the news that my dear friend, Eva Abraham – van der Mark has left us, in her old age. I felt her frailty and sadness after her beloved Julian had died, when I visited her last February in Amsterdam, and was afraid it would be the last time I would see her. She was a beautiful flower that withered after a magnificent, long, bloom.
