Dinah Veeris writes farewell letter: “My task is done, carry on the heritage”
Dinah Veeris, the well-known herbalist and founder of the Botanical Garden in Curaçao, has shared her last message in an open farewell letter to the people of Curaçao. In the letter she thanks the community for their support and trust during her life’s work and indicates that her time has come to take care of her “heavenly garden”. Dinah passed away yesterday [September 6, 2024] at the age of 85. She had been ill for some time.

In the letter she describes how her dream of setting up a historic botanical garden has come true and that it is now up to the new generations to continue this heritage. She states that she is proud of her legacy and emphasizes that the responsibility for the future of the garden now lies with her successors. She calls on everyone to continue working to protect and preserve Curaçao’s culture, natural heritage and valuable herbal knowledge.
In her letter, Dinah asks her followers to support the new leaders in their mission to sustain her life’s work. She concludes with a word of thanks to her people and a message of hope for the future. “My task is done,” Dinah writes, “and I hand it over with pride and confidence to those who will build on what I have been able to begin.” She ends with a call for everyone to continue to care for the island’s heritage, “our culture and our herbs.”
