Yard Vibes (e. 13) with the Dutch premiere of Cristo Rey

Friday, October 2nd, Caribbean Creativity hosts another edition of Yard Vibes at De Balie Amsterdam. We are proud to present the Dutch premiere of the 2013 Dominican drama film Cristo Rey, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival that same year. After several earlier attempts, we are finally able to present the film in Amsterdam. The screening starts at 9pm and of course there will be an afterparty (free entrance!) with our resident DJs Rowstone and Sotu the Traveller spinning reggae, dancehall and a little bit of reggaeton til late!

Film (21:00-23.00 hrs)

Yolanda (short film, Dutch premiere!) | 2013 | dir. Cristian Carretero | Puerto Rico / Dominican Republic | 14 min.

Alternating between observational cinema and a dreamlike visual landscape, Cristian Carretero’s short film Yolanda offers a glimpse into the Dominican immigration experience rarely depicted in narrative film. Featuring lush cinematography and a keen ear for sound design, the film tells the story of Yolanda, a single mother struggling to raise her children on the poor outskirts of Santo Domingo (Caribbean Film Academy)

Yard Vibes
Cristo Rey (main film, Dutch premiere!) | 2013 | dir. Leticia Tonos | Dominican Republic / Haiti | 96 min

Cristo Rey centres on Janvier and Rudy, half-brothers from the same island but two different worlds, who confront each other for the love of the same woman, Jocelyn, the younger sister of a local gang kingpin. When Janvier and Jocelyn fall madly in love with each other, they have to devise a plan to escape. Besides offering a Caribbean Romeo and Juliet, this Dominican film brings out the shades of prejudice common on many Caribbean Islands with a look at the tensions plaguing Haitians that immigrate illegally to the richer side of the island they share with the Dominican Republic. Director Leticia Tonos Paniagua brings a familiar story of love and prejudice but places it in a unique and compelling setting. In Cristo Rey, a shantytown in Santo Domingo that the movie is named for, a drug lord and a corrupt police chief reign supreme from opposite sides of the law. They contend with each other while squeezing the impoverished inhabitants of Cristo Rey (Epoch Times).
