Het heeft tot het begin van de 20e eeuw geduurd voordat er op de Spaanssprekende eilanden van de Cariben überhaupt sprake was van een duidelijke Afrikaanse component in de dichtkunst van de eilanden. Dat kwam omdat de blanke bovenlaag het Afrikaanse element in de cultuur heeft proberen weg te moffelen of te negeren.

In de periode 1980-2014 was de levensverwachting op Aruba en Curaçao ongunstiger dan in Nederland. Ook was ditr verschil groter dan de verschillen tussen andere Caribische eilanden en hun voormalige kolonisators. De doodsoorzaken kwamen op de eilanden overeen. Vooral veel hart- en vaatziekten en uitwendige oorzaken zoals moord en verkeersongelukken veroorzaakten veel sterfte in het Caribisch gebied.

Deze site wordt gehost door de bibliotheek van de Internationale Universiteit van Florida, gevestigd te Miami. Friday, October 2nd, Caribbean Creativity hosts another edition of Yard Vibes at De Balie Amsterdam. We are proud to present the Dutch premiere of the 2013 Dominican drama film Cristo Rey, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival that same year. After several earlier attempts, we are finally able to present the film in Amsterdam. On a pedestal, in the eye of this hurricane of multilingual poetry—“a vibrant blend of English, Spanish, and Patois”—written by Loretta Collins Klobah, womanhood sheds her skin of “concrete and steel.” Sometimes this skin is personal or societal loss, the loss of a lover or husband who left, or the loss of a young child, whose dead body was burrowed through by a motherless bullet. In the poem, “El Velorio, The Wake (1893),” it is a harkening to the Puerto Rican national painting of the same name that had prophesied the “halo of flies” above the sleeping child. Also embedded in this skin, is a fisherman, brutalized by a police officer, who wrestled him to the ground like a fish baited and bleeding from the mouth. read on…
Celebrando 2014 – Salsa & Bomba Festival
On June 21, 2014, more than 350 enjoyed a celebration of Puerto Rico’s rich culture at the Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Cultural Center’s annual Salsa & Heritage Festival, which took place at the JCC Ballroom on the Jewish Community Campus. This year’s celebration brought ancestral Bomba traditions to Austin with Bomba Elder & Master Jorge Emmanuelli Náter, Melanie Emmanuelli, and Anthony Allamandola, who joined PRFDance in an exciting joint performance. Our heritage festival also featured Salsa by Orquesta Trabuko, comida criolla by Chago’s Caribbean Cuisine, and displays of artesania. Beyond the lively cultural display, our festival brought economic benefits to our local economy as cultural tourists (approximately 50% of our audience) came into Austin to enjoy this unique experience. read on…
