Guess who’s coming to dinner too?

WOW Amsterdam cordially invites you to the opening of ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too?’ on Thursday 29 June from 5pm. During the opening, a group of men will perform a ‘Haka’ (Maori ceremonial war dance) in honour of women. The men wear tunics specially designed for this performance and exhibition. Afterwards, P.C. Hooftprijs-winning author Astrid Roemer will give a short speech in the Green Gallery, in which she reflects on Patricia’s work.

Patricia Kaersenhout – Your history makes me so horny

‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too?’ is a community art project by visual artist and activist Patricia Kaersenhout, in collaboration with AGA LAB, het GildeLab, BYBROWN and WOW Amsterdam. With this project, Kaersenhout delivers an artistic critique of Judy Chicago’s ‘The Dinner Party’ (1979), which celebrates strong women but underrepresents women of colour. Inspired by this work, Kaersenhout builds an installation consisting of a large triangular dining table, full of symbolism, where she honours 36 Black women, ‘heroines of resistance’.

Kaersenhout researched hidden and forgotten stories over the past months. Together with photographic material, these are printed on the tunics. This way, the men performing the ‘haka’ bear the women’s stories literally and figuratively.

COMMUNITY ART PROJECT‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too?’ is firmly rooted in Amsterdam West through a unique, intensive collaboration between three cultural institutions: AGA LAB, het GildeLab, WOW Amsterdam and local creatives, such as the emerging fashion label BYBROWN. The project has come about thanks to working closely with mainly non-Western women from WOW’s immediate surroundings. The table in the exhibition is built by Rosa te Velde and Maria Gracia Ogliastri.

SUPPORTED BYThis project was made possible thanks to the generous financial support of Mondriaan Fonds, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Gemeente Amsterdam and Stadsdeel Amsterdam West.
