Fesiten – first time: Nieuwe expo Remy Jungerman

With Fesiten – first time Remy Jungerman presents his latest works, in which he explores his origins and surroundings. In his sculptures he unites two cultures: that of the West-African diaspora and the modernist discourse of western art. He uses, for example, geometrical patterns that are characteristic for artists like Piet Mondrian, as well as for the cloths used and worn by Jungermans family when visiting their ancestor shrine. Hence the title ‘fesiten’, which means so much as ‘history’ – in this case a very personal one.

For the series Mask, Aatjan Renders asked several befriended artists to make a mask, with which he then photographed them. At first glance it seems like the masks hide the identity of their makers, but in fact they are more like an amplification of it. Each mask is an echo of the artists’ ideas about what a mask is supposed to do. Some see it as a means of concealment, while others use it to stand out from the crowd. Their choice of materials and visual language is also very telling of their preferences; so in a way, the masks actually emphasize the makers’ personality. Accordingly, the result is a very intimate yet alienating portrait series.
